What did I just buy?
Okay, first things first. My name's Mike. Regular autocrosser about ten years ago; no experience with the WDC Region. Got into big fat ill-handling Audis back around 2003 and lost interest for a while. I just came into this shifter cart in trade for a car I was thinking about running this year in LeMons and I don't know what to do with it. Help me out.
I've been looking through the SCCA rule book and can't figure out what class it belongs in or what I need to do to make it pass tech. Fully familiar with autocross and all, but have no experience with things like carts, things with no suspensions, things with no differentials... Ten years ago in Blue Ridge Region, they probably would have just thrown it into some Mod class and not worried too much about particulars.
It's 160cc, has what amounts to a dirtbike engine with an built-in 4sp sequential box. My Dad and I just picked it up and slid it into a station wagon with relative ease; I'm a scrawny guy, so I don't think it weighs more than 150 pounds or so. By the letter of the law, it sounds like I'm not really qualified for the F125 class. I'm hoping there's a Mod class that fits it, but I don't know what it is. It looks to be in very good working order and needs only a few minor things. Really, I'm just not trying to show up at Fedex Field only to be told that it's unsafe and/or unclassable.
So I need help with the broad strokes. From my experience back in the day, there was some flexibility in terms of the rules. The guy I got it from said he was allowed to run it in the F125 class, but that was probably a different region and I don't know the particulars. For the record, I'm not currently interested in points, trophies, going to Nationals, et cetera. Just want to drive this machine in a controlled environment and have some fun while getting back into the local Solo2 scene. What do I need to do to ensure it's safe to SCCA regulations and fit it into a class? I'm still used to throwing on my SA90 helmet, khakis, and loafers; so any particulars in terms of appropriate helmet and apparel would also be much appreciated.
-Cheers!
Mike
