Purchasing an SCCA Race Car

So, I've completed my school requirements for my Novice permit.  Now I need a few races to get my regional.  I also need a race car.  I want to buy a T1 class car.  A Corvette Z06 would be great!

My only concerns are 1) should I buy/run one year with a small car to get experience.  2) if I buy an older vette is that an issue.  Are older race cars less reliable?

Any advice welcome

Ralph

Re: Purchasing an SCCA Race Car

I haven't been there in a while but sccaforums.com (not officially affiliated with the club) has good forums and most of the T guys post there as far as I know. You should able to get a lot of advice and they'll treat you well.

Re: Purchasing an SCCA Race Car

I'm hoping this place picks up a little.  It's a real nice board.  Thanks for the tip.

Re: Purchasing an SCCA Race Car

My opinion, learn in what you plan on racing.  If you go into T1, then school in T1 and get some track time before you pop out onto a track and get in traffic.

Re: Purchasing an SCCA Race Car

Congrats on getting your permit!  To help answer your question answer this first:.   If you are going into a corner with a competitor who is looking to pass you, will you backoff because you are afraid of getting that Z06 damaged?  If you will back off - get a year of rookie experience in a less expensive car.  If you can drive hard and are willing to learn from rookie mistakes and pay the costs - go for the Z06 and learn in your car you plan on racing.
