C. Wayne Armbrust

This year marks my 20th year as a member of WDCR Region and the SCCA. In that time, I have spent a vast majority of it working as a volunteer in the Club Racing side. In 2006 the chance to contribute as an Assistant Flag Chief opened and I spent the next 4 years as an Assistant. Then I stepped into the role as the WDCR Flag Chief for another year. As I stepped back from the position as Flag Chief I took on a new role as the F&C Divisional Administrator for the SCCA Northeast Division.

The chance to contribute helping with the Club Racing program got even more interesting in 2011. I took on the position as Director of Club Racing and remained very busy in that job for the next three years. We had numerous opportunities to introduce and try a few new things through those years. Some worked well, some not so much. I had top notch assistance from a volunteer support staff that we assembled as a management team for the WDCR Club Racing Program. We did host the first Super Tour for the DC Region, and event that continues through this current season.

Along the way there were some opportunities to assist the PDX program from time to time, as well as helping find facilities for the Rally Cross program. In 2015 I took advantage of the chance to participate in a WDCR Competition Driver School. And completed the requirements for a competition license the following year.

In my former life I worked in management for the metals mining industry, specifically in the maintenance and engineering departments of some large hard rock mines, mills, smelting, and refining. Most of the work was in the western U.S. eventually retiring from the last assignment in Alaska.

Since retirement, I have spent considerable time in volunteer community service within Clarke County, Virginia. Over 12 Years were spent serving on the 911 Emergency Communications upgrade committee, Industrial Development Authority, and Barns of Rose Hill development and Construction Committee.

I am also U.S. Air Force veteran.

Through joining the Board of Directors, if elected, I hope to continue serving the Region with the experience and insight from many years of service.


Hayes Lewis

Ask me what I do for a living, and I’ll tell you, “I love my wife, I love my dog, and I race cars.”

As I child I was obsessed with cars. As a toddler, I shifted the gears in my father’s MG. Each birthday and Christmas was about new four-wheeled toys. When I watched Mears chase down Johncock, in ’82 I was possessed; I wanted to race.

But I didn’t come from a racing family, and I wasn’t exposed to anything the SCCA had to offer. Into my late twenties, I thought racing was just something for professionals and the super-rich. At a cocktail party, a discussion about cars turned into an invitation to share a ride at an autocross. One run and I was addicted. You couldn’t wipe the smile off my face for days.

I had just left my position to travel the world, starting by traveling around the USA in a ’90 Miata (which I proudly own to this day). I had the pleasure of adding autocross schools from Atlanta to California to my itinerary. I raced in at least half a dozen states, and met great SCCA members from coast-to-coast.

In 2003, I was offered a position which necessitated a move to the D.C. region. I found the WDCR-SCCA very welcoming, and started five years of autocross on the asphalt plains of Fed-Ex field.

This is where I heard about PDX, and I decided to take the next step in my racing “career”. Around the same time, I was exposed to club racing, and realized that if it was something that I wanted to do badly enough, it was possible. After a few years of saving and getting the Miata prepared, I spent 2011 active in the WDCR-SCCA PDX program. Then bought an old race car, and set forth on the journey that brings me to today.

For six years, I have been living my life’s dream. Racing is everything I thought it would be, and more. I’ve had amazing competition, experienced the community ethic of pitching in to get everyone on the grid, and made great friends; I’m eternally grateful to the Club.

I’m running for the Board of Directors to give back to the organization that’s helped me realize my dream. My time out of the seat is often under the car. Being on the board is an opportunity to provide service away from the track, in an environment where I can make the most positive impact.

My day job is in the Travel Industry, where I’ve been employed for over 20 years. After spending two years at sea, my career has been focused on meeting ever increasing sales goals. I’ve found success by listening to my customers’ needs, by not being afraid to be criticized, and by consulting to help my customers achieve their goals. I develop, maintain, and strengthen relationships. I use positive means to encourage associates to make greater impact with the same effort. By helping people see their common goals, my negotiations always end in a win-win.

I ask that you grant me an opportunity to serve you on the Board of Directors. I believe my unique skill set will help the Club grow and prosper, but most importantly, meet the needs of you, the members.

John Nesbitt

I am John Nesbitt and I am running for your Board this year.

I joined WDCR in 2003.  I have raced (Formula Ford), flagged, and am now a steward.  I served on the old Competition Committee as a driver rep.  I advise the Club Racing Committee as stewards rep.  Years ago, I was a rallyist - driving, navigating, and working checkpoints.

I am retired after a career in IT, working in Canada, the United States, and Europe.

Why am I running for the Board?  I do not have a particular agenda or pet project.  I do believe that the Region faces challenges that require a long-term vision.  I bring a combination of life experience, sporting experience, and commitment to change that will help the Board navigate these challenges.

The question we so often hear is, “Are we a club or are we a business?”

The answer, of course, is, “Both.”  Yes, we are a club, bound together by our love of motorsports.  We are also a small-to-medium business, with a turnover approaching a million dollars.  We stage events with large financial exposure.  And we face short- and long-term threats to our ‘business’.

The Board should take an overall, Region-wide perspective and:

·         Appoint the best possible program coordinators.

·         Provide resources and strategic direction.

·         Monitor and evaluate results, making adjustments as necessary.

The most important role of the Board is to look down the road and to ensure that the Region is well-placed to enjoy a prosperous future.

Shawn Roberts

In 2004, I was dragged to a few autocross events by my girlfriend and after a slow start, by late 2004 we had bought a Miata (official car of the autocross addicted) and joined the SCCA. In 2005, we did 50+ different autocross events in the Mid-Atlantic area. Then we decided to cut back a bit on the number of events in 2006, so we joined the DC Solo committee. We wanted to help put on the best run events we had seen during all the different events in 2005. In addition, I became a Solo safety steward in 2007. When the Solo chair stepped down in 2010, I was one of the people that stepped up to become the Solo co-chairs with Evanthe Salisbury and David Sann.

Because autocross was not taking up enough of our time we decided to start rallycrossing. In 2010 we started rallycrossing and by late 2011 I had taken over keeping the rallycross website up to date. I have since gotten more involved in registration and timing for the rallycross events as well as becoming a rallycross safety steward in 2013. I've trophied at the last 2 Rallycross Nationals with 2 different Miatas and will be attending my 3rd Nationals this fall.

As I became involved in the various disciplines, I've encouraged others to become involved and join the SCCA. I did not grow up in a racing household as demonstrated by the long procession of white Ford Taurus wagons my parents owned during my teen years. While my interest in motorsports did not come from my parents, I did get the volunteer spirit from them. Every activity I was involved in growing up, my parents were there as volunteers. Playing soccer, my parents ran the local soccer organization; joining 4-H, my mom was the leader of the local club. Knowing how much volunteers put into making clubs work, I have always volunteered to help out as needed. I was the treasurer of my local 4-H club and the corresponding secretary for the local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa in college. Now, I'm running for the Board to help out at a higher level.

I have worked in computer support for Montgomery College for the last 17 years and live in Woodbridge, VA with my wife Katie Orgler and a few less Miatas than you would see in a Spec Miata race.

Alan R. Olson

My name is Alan Olson and I have been a member of the Washington DC Region since 2004 when a neighbor convinced me to try the DC Region SCCA Driving School. I have been Administrator and Driver’s Representative for the SSM Race Class (largest class and still expanding) for the past 3 years.

Below is a list of Region positions I have held:

Regional Competitor since 2004. National Competitor (now Majors) since 2004. Regional Registrar. Regional Scrutineer. SM Racer, 2011 Summit Point National Winner in SM. SSM Racer SSM Administrator for past 3 years. SSM Driver Representative for past 3 years. Current SRF3 Racer.

When I first started racing with SCCA, I learned early that it takes many volunteers to make this club work. I took on the role of volunteer immediately upon registering for my first race, helping with registration. Since that time, I have spent time lending a hand on pit lane/grid, timing and scoring as well as in the tech shed. I know it takes earnest efforts to keep the club moving forward.

3 years ago, I took on a much larger role as SSM Administrator. We drastically changed the process for “Sealing” all cars that compete in the SSM class. Many said such an undertaking could not be successful. The results speak for themselves as we took a popular class and increased participation while other classes saw decreasing participation. It took many days, weeks, and months of effort as well as lots of blood and sweat, many would have written off the undertaking. Thanks to others that participated, the class has been a major success for the DC Region.

I bring a business background to the process as a Financial Planner for my own firm with 30 years of successful business experience. I am a racer; however, I have attended solos, instructed in PDX and participated in rallies (in the 80’s) in the past. I believe I can be an asset to the Region and the BoD as a member of the Board as I have already done for the SSM Class in Club Racing.

Mike McKee

My name is Mike McKee and I am running for a seat on the Board of Directors for the WDCR SCCA. I know there are a few other candidates, so I will try and give a brief introduction to those of you I haven’t had the privilege of meeting just yet.

I have been participating in Solo events since 2012 and my passion for the sport led me to join the NCC Autocross Committee in 2015 and the WDCR committee in 2016 as a novice coordinator. I have a strong passion for exposing as many people to the world of amateur racing as possible. This includes entirely new members, but also exposing our existing members to the different disciplines we have to offer. While I've spent most of my 5 years racing with SCCA within the Solo Program, I am interested in all aspects of amateur racing and would like to eventually try all that the SCCA has to offer. I see the Board position as another way to give back to the DC Region SCCA community as a whole.

I am a former Project Manager who has recently returned to teaching High School Science and Robotics at the Jemicy School. I’m well aware of old line ‘He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches’ but teaching has allowed me to work in a profession where I can have face-to-face impact every day and still have time to pursue other interests and passions. This includes more recreational pursuits like racing, but it’s also allowed me to chase self-employment ventures over the years. I hope my experiences in all of these fields will help me see the overall picture and even perhaps provide some insights into making this chapter even better.
