SCCA Turns 80!

We're celebrating 80 years of SCCA history! It all started in 1944 when seven enthusiasts gathered to establish the groundwork of what would become the SCCA.

Did you know the Washington DC Region is the Club's oldest region? Here's the intriguing part... While WDCR recently celebrated its 75th anniversary, it's noteworthy that when SCCA was founded in 1944, there wasn't a concept of regions. Four years later, the Washington DC Region was established as the first region, and WDCR was subsequently recognized as the inaugural region within SCCA.

WOT Scholarship

Announcing the WDCR HPDE WOT Scholarship!

The WDCR High Performance Drivers Education Program has partnered with Alpex International LLC to create the WDCR HPDE Women on Track Scholarship Program presented by Alpex International LLC.  The Women On Track (“WOT”) Scholarship is designed to facilitate and encourage women motorsports enthusiasts to try their hand at High Performance Driving at the events put on by the HPDE program.  Inspired by the national SCCA Women on Track initiative, whose mission is to expand participation of women in all facets of SCCA programs and activities, the WDCR WOT Scholarship will cover the entry fee for one recipient in each of the HPDE events in 2024.  Each event will feature a new scholarship recipient.  The goal of the scholarship program is to allow the recipients to further their participation in motorsports and to increase the number of women participating in the HPDE program.

Any driver or volunteer that has previously participated in an SCCA motorsports event is eligible. Scholarship applicants with prior participation with the Washington D.C. Region will be given priority.

WDCR’s leadership team is blessed with three members of the National SCCA WOT program.  Taylor Hyatt, vice-chairman of the Board of Directors, Natalie Hazlip, Ambassador for the Dominion HPDE and TT program, and Kerry McElwee, Ambassador for the Summit Point HPDE and TT program, all serve on National Women on Track committees.  Taylor, Natalie, and Kerry will bring their experience and expertise to bear in administering the WDCR WOT Scholarship program and working to advance the participation of women in all the events in the WDCR region.  Taylor, Natalie and Kerry will be assisted by the HPDE Program Chairs, David Miller and Trey Albrecht.

To apply for the WOT Scholarship, fill out this short form.  When completing the form, applicants are encouraged to select each event they would be able to attend if they were awarded the scholarship.  Each scholarship winner is limited to one event scholarship per year.  The scholarship award covers only the admission fee into the event; the participant is responsible for her car, travel to and from the event, and any other costs associated with participating in an HPDE event.

2023 WDCR Time Trial Champions!

Congratulations to our five 2023 championship winners!

Max 4 - Bryan McCrea
Bryan's Pennsylvania hillclimbing efforts payed off in a faster car this year. Resetting records at 2 of the bumpiest tracks, besting the Jefferson record by almost a second. Looking to 2024, Max 4 is going to be red hot with who's fired up and the number of participants that will be involved.

Max 5 - Faraz Ahsan
The winner was determined at our final event with Faraz taking not only the class win over but also resetting his class record. He took the win over Jeffrey Walters by .438 of a second and 2 points. Was amazing season battle of aero vs no aero between 2 talented drivers as they duked it out on who could reset the most records.

Tuner 3 - Muzafar Umarov
Pull a full house sweep of resetting records at every track this year. This man was a rocket ship that was too fast to catch. Definitely a class to watch for 2024 as RWD is looking to make a response.

Tuner 4 - Vincent Mak
For another year in a row, Vincent continues to dominate Tuner 4 in WDCR's most competitive and largest class. 7 wins and 3 records across the 9 events.

Sport 4 - Andrew Lunsford
Andrew pulled a very successful season, also doing a full house sweep capturing all 4 of the flags and reseting Sport 4 records as he went.

This was our second most successful season ever by participation numbers, resetting those record numbers at 3 of the 4 tracks. This is also the most classes we've had qualify for the championship, ever. Thank you to everyone who came out and made this possible. We are all very excited for what 2024 will bring in competition and tracks we will be visiting. Please have patience while we formulate the 2024 season.

Notice to Autocross Competitors: Sound Restrictions

Let's talk about sound....

We all know how hard it is to get sites. And not everyone in every community appreciates what we do. But we are committed to making reasonable efforts to keep noise within acceptable levels. It's just good Citizenship right? For drivers who tour already, this should be quite familiar. For local autocrossers, this is very new. So here is the basic rundown.

Key points:

  • 100 dB limit will be measured 50 ft from course at a high throttle zone determined during course setup. Workers will be stationed by the meter and record each run.

  • Courtesy warnings will be given at 97dB and competitiors who reach the 100dB limit will be given an opportunity to take corrective action, that must be approved before they continue.

  • Records will be kept, and if a driver continues to bring a car that violates the sound restrictions, that driver may have to bring a different car next time. DDS is always a good choice... unless the muffler is rusted away, of course!

  • It's important that we respect the community where we play. Sites are becoming increasingly more difficult to obtain, and we need to be grateful in word and deed for the opportunities we still have.

Thank you for understanding and cooperating. We are committed to working together to make sure this policy satisfies participants and the surrounding community as best as possible.

Restricted and Hazardous Area Access Bulletin - April 2023

Effective Immediately:

All programs and participants:

Change in access to Restricted, hazardous, or “Hot” areas has changed, Washington DC Region will not approve or issue access to the “Hot” areas to non-members or commercial entities not specifically requested to enter or assigned to those areas.

A hazardous area is defined as: “any area outside the protection of a positive barrier.” In general, only those specifically assigned will be provided appropriate ID (Wrist Band, etc.) to areas where any potential hazards exceeded those of the general public.

General spectator access will be viewed as the limitation of any non-member or commercial enterprises not relating to arrangements with the Region.

Insurance underwriters are expecting access to the areas be by trained and experienced SCCA members. Washington DC Region reserves the right to designate individual(s) for specific purposes into the areas identified as hazardous.

Each person entering a hazardous will notify the individual in charge of that zone of their presence. Those individuals are obligated to follow the instructions from the individual responsible for that zone. The chief authority in the zone involved is not obligated to allow access or may direct individuals to safer locations or leave the area.

This policy directly applies to professional photographers. Summit Point Raceway is aware of our action and in support of controlling access to the areas of concern. Others desiring access may secure approval from the Director of WDCR Road Racing Program or the Region Executive or alternative.

WDCR: Recipient of the Jumbo Region of the Year Award!

Mission Accomplished: Regional Health Update for 2022

We have now fully completed the transition of our Administration management and financial operations. All pieces are now in place and operating as intended.

18 months ago, starting June of 2021, the WDCR Region began the process of developing a new Administration Team and refreshing the Region’s business management processes.  Through this process refresh we conducted a holistic financial review and overhauled our accounting processes.

Step-by-step, each piece of WDCR’s processes were reviewed and reconsidered: Our decisions included changing our business banking, moved our accounting process to a professional service, and established business with a CPA (Graber and Associates; Baltimore) experienced in our servicing our Region’s needs. At this we began the process of restructuring our budgeting planning processes to a more traditional time-driven income/expense plan to account for our event-driven income. Additionally, we established a new electronic bill tracking and payment process. With these new accounting procedures, and the transition to a traditional budget format on a month-by-month base, we have streamlined our accounting processes to more realistically reflect actual income.

In that year and a half, we also interviewed and hired an experienced member of our Region to step-in as our new Region Administrator. Our intent was to also bring on a second individual to train into the Administrator's job and provide assistance and relief when needed and be in place to take over administrative duties, if and when needed. Unfortunately, the second staff member resigned in mid-2022. We then brought on a replacement in the Fall months of 2022. We now have two part-time staff administrators servicing the needs of our Membership. With Vincent Mandile and Liv Willis on board as our Region Administration staff, we have a strong, well-functioning team in place as we head into the 2023 season.

We also made the decision to move our business to a new banking account servicer more closely aligned with our needs. This was a successful 12 month transition and all ongoing expenses have been resolved to our new servicer. As of December 28th, 2022 our legacy accounts have been closed with all balances moved to these new accounts.

The last piece of our financial reformation was bringing the Region’s investment accounts under manageable control of the Board of Directors. With the approval of the Board, Russ Gardner (Chairman of the Investment Account Committee) has spearheaded the integration of a new investment management process in conjunction with our investment account management team.

In the overall view, the Washington D.C. Region SCCA is now sitting in much better financial posture heading into 2023. The exhaustive work of those involved, primarily volunteers serving our region, have ensured that our new administrative structures, accounting practices, and investment posture are in alignment with our organization’s size, scope, and cash flow needs. The overall result of this hard work, blood, sweat, and tears is the Region administrative expenses will be lower than previous years.

To all those involved, the Region extends a sincere thank you and appreciation of your guidance, patience, and foresight.   We are on a great footing, and can’t wait to see you at the track this coming year.
